Salus is delighted to offer an exciting trainee opportunity within our Infant & Early Years service, providing you with the chance to combine academic learning with hands-on clinical experience.

This is a unique opportunity to train as a Trainee Infant & Early Years Practitioner (CYP-PT IEYP) while working within Salus. The programme will allow you to develop specialist knowledge and practical skills in supporting infants, young children and their families, while making a meaningful difference to the lives of those we work with.

The training programme is due to begin in January 2027 and will be delivered in partnership with University College London (UCL) and Anna Freud.

Any appointment will be made subject to a satisfactory enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. 

About the role

As a trainee, you will spend approximately half of your working week undertaking academic teaching and personal study, with the remainder of your time based within the Salus service.

You will have the opportunity to put your learning into practice through direct clinical work with infants, young children and their families. You will receive regular clinical supervision and will work alongside experienced practitioners within a supportive, welcoming team.

Your role will include opportunities to:

You may also have opportunities to develop skills in approaches such as Video Interaction Guidance (VIG) and other evidence-based interventions relevant to infant and early years mental health.

Training and development

This is a fully salaried training opportunity, meaning you will be employed by Salus throughout the programme while also being enrolled as a student on the relevant postgraduate training programme.

The training will begin in January 2027 and will combine academic teaching, personal study and supervised clinical practice.

Successful completion of the programme will lead to a Postgraduate Diploma, subject to meeting the university’s course requirements.

Main Purpose of Post

This is a training role within the Children and Young People’s Improving Access to Psychological Therapies Programme (CYP IAPT), delivered by NHS England and partners to improve existing young people’s mental health services working in the community.

The postholder will:

  • Work under supervision, to deliver high-quality, brief outcome focused evidence-based interventions for children 0-2 and their families
  • Support parents who are experiencing difficulties with feeding, toileting, sleeping or persistent crying or experiencing difficult behaviour with their children
  • Attend all university-based taught and self-study days required by University College London and work in service for the remaining days using newly developed skills.
  • The post holder will work with people with different cultural backgrounds and ages, using interpreters when necessary and should be committed to equal opportunities  

Responsibilities and duties

  • Assess and deliver, under clinical supervision, outcome focused, evidence-based interventions to parents experiencing difficulties with their children.
  • Support and empower parents to make informed choices about the intervention.
  • Operate at all times from an inclusive values base, which recognises and respects diversity.
  • Undertake accurate assessment of risk to self and others
  • Adhere to the service request for support protocols. Under supervision, signpost unsuitable requests to the relevant service as necessary.
  • Through close clinical case management and supervision, escalate cases where the level of need becomes beyond scope, or more severe ensuring adherence to other relevant elements of service delivery.
  • Provide a range of information and support for evidence based psychological treatments. this may include guided self-help. This work may be face-to-face, virtual, by telephone or via other media.
  • Attend multi-disciplinary meetings relating to referrals or parents accessing treatment, where appropriate.
  • Keep timely and accurate records of all activity in line with service protocols and use these records and outcome data to inform decision making. Complete all requirements relating to data collection.
  • Work in collaboration with children, families and communities to enhance and widen access.

Training and Supervision

  • Attend and fulfil all the requirements of the training element of the post including practical, academic and practice-based assessments.
  • Apply learning from the training programme to practice.
  • Attend meetings with academic tutor in relation to course work to meet the required standards.
  • Prepare and present case load information to Clinical Supervisors within the service on an agreed and scheduled basis, in order to ensure safe practice and the governance obligations of the trainee, supervisor and service are delivered.

Person specification

We are looking for a motivated, reflective and compassionate individual who is passionate about supporting the emotional wellbeing, development and relationships of babies, young children and their families.

The successful candidate will demonstrate the following:

ESSENTIALDESIRABLE
QUALIFICATIONS• A minimum of a 2:2 Bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant subject, such as Psychology, Social Work, Education or a related discipline.
• Significant relevant professional experience may also be considered where this demonstrates an appropriate level of knowledge, skills and experience.
• Previous training or professional experience in a mental health or related profession, for example Psychology, Nursing, Health Visiting, Social Work, Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy, Special Educational Needs, Psychiatry, Psychotherapy or Counselling.
• A strong record of previous academic achievement and an ability to engage with postgraduate-level study.
SKILLS & ABILITIES• Ability to communicate effectively, warmly and sensitively with babies, young children, parents and carers.

EXPERIENCE• Two or more years' experience of working with children aged 0–5 and/or their families, supporting their development, wellbeing or care.
• Experience of working with or developing an understanding of children aged 0–5, including through professional, voluntary, educational or observational settings.
• Experience of multi-agency working and communicating effectively with internal and external professionals and services.
• Experience of observing and thinking about children's emotional wellbeing, relationships, development and caregiving environments across the 0–5 age range.
• Experience of working sensitively with parents and carers and understanding the importance of relationships in supporting children's emotional development.
