Safety in Action

Salus_Logo_Square (web ready)‘Safety in Action’ is an interactive event for Year 6 children to learn about some of the dangers they may face as they become more independent and prepare for transition to secondary school.

This event has been running in Kent since the early 1990’s, with several thousand children from Maidstone, Ashford, Swale, Tonbridge and Malling, Tunbridge Wells, Sevenoaks, Dartford, Gravesham, Shepway and Swanley taking part.

It is supported by many organisations including Salus, Kent Police, Kent Fire and Rescue Service, RNLI, Kent County Council, Kenward Trust, Drive to Ensure, Hopkins+ (British Heart Foundation) and UK Power Networks.

A number of scenarios are set up by the organisations involved, designed to simulate and provide information about a variety of topics which may include:

  • Drugs/Alcohol
  • Fire Safety
  • Water Safety
  • Electrical Safety
  • Rail Safety
  • Road Safety
  • Online Safety
  • Personal Safety
  • Stranger Danger
  • Emergency Life Support
  • Driver Safety
  • Farm Safety

Children are divided into teams to rotate around the different scenarios, spending 10 minutes at each. The scenario content is decided by the relevant organisation or agency delivering them. However they are all designed to engage and inform the children on specific safety issues relating to their area of expertise. Please see attached Scenario Information Leaflet for more information.

School staff comments:

“This is always a totally valuable experience for the children and I think they are extremely fortunate to be offered the chance to explore the issues covered in a safe environment.”

“What a fantastically well organised afternoon, I think I am learning as much as the children!”
